Route 1 Racer Bar
Candy Blog15 May 2012 | 5:46 pmOne of the most popular candy bars in the country is the Snickers bar. This is not review of that. Instead I’m testing a knock off version, presented by Aldi, the German grocery chain under their house brand Route 1. The Route 1 Racer Bar comes in a well priced bag of nearly 10 ounces (9.8) fun sized bars for only $1.79. The little bars smell good, like milky chocolate and roasted peanuts. They’re small bars, smaller than the Romeo and clock in at about .70 ounces and about 110 calories. The size is still a nice portion, and two make a good treat. The construction of the bar is… -

Candy Review: Amy’s Organic Andy’s Dandy Candy Crispy
14 May 2012 | 5:33 amSweet moogley googley – what a mouthful. Being able to rattle off the name of this treat to the product ordering manager of your neighborhood supermarket or favorite mom and pop shop without referencing a cheat sheet is highly unlikely, so be sure to tuck a tangible reminder somewhere safe. By the end of this review, you’re going to need it. (Other sites refer to it as “Amy’s CRISPY Organic Candy Bar”). Amy’s should ring a bell with fans of natural and organic convenience foods, snacks, and pantry staples due to their 25 year run as a wholesome eats purveyor. -
Candy Review: Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Chocolate Dips
10 May 2012 | 8:38 amDecade after decade, household brands like Wonder Bread and Velveeta consistently satisfy the comfort food cravings of middle America, but when a sugar craving strikes, most know that one particular product line offers a semi-elitist fix without breaking the bank — Jelly Belly. The 143 year old company has achieved the adoration of the masses, not for their gummy candies or candy corns, but for their ever-enduring collection of creatively flavored “gourmet” jelly beans. As with the majority of their confectionery biz campadres, Jelly Belly wisely rolls out new products every now and… -
Candy Review: Choxie Truffle Bars
9 May 2012 | 8:35 amWhen it comes to candy, decision-making is not my forte. On a recent visit to Target, I stood in the candy aisle, dazzled with options, and ended up leaving with not just one of their store-brand Choxie truffle bars, but four. Choxie has been around for a while, but I hadn’t tried anything in this line. I chose two milk chocolate bars and two dark chocolate bars: a dark chocolate raspberry lemon biscotti truffle bar, a dark chocolate mint cookie truffle bar, a milk chocolate crème brûlée truffle bar, and a milk chocolate peanut butter pretzel bar. The shiny, colorful packaging and… -
Candy Review: Cakedy - Minnesota’s new candy bar
7 May 2012 | 8:45 amThe chocolate bar has been around since 1847. In one form or another, cake has been around since long before then. But in recent years we’ve seen a surge of interest in cupcakes, designer cakes and cake pops. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if someone somehow combined both the candy bar and the cake worlds to prove to all of the naysayers out there that this whole cake fascination is more than a fad? Well, that’s exactly what Ryan Taylor did. Along with little sister Krystal as baker, cake-loving Ryan began experimenting with recipes that married cake and candy. The result? Cakedy…

Route 1 Romeo Bar
14 May 2012 | 11:40 amAldi is a German chain of stores that are very popular in parts of the United States. They carry low priced merchandise, usually Aldi’s house brands and most of the packaged products made in Germany. They have a great selection of low-priced, good quality candy. Much of it is under the brands Moser Roth, Choceur or Grandessa. But two years ago I noticed that they launched a line more traditional candy bars under a more North American-oriented brand called Route 1. This assortment features knock-offs of common candy bars. The Route 1 Romeo Bar is like the Mounds Bar but is made with milk… -

Grasshopper Truffles
9 May 2012 | 3:10 amHere are three reasons why you should make these Grasshopper Truffles today: They have an awesome mint-chocolate taste. Mint and chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combinations, and it should be one of yours, too! They are ridiculously, supremely, stupidly easy to make. Can you crush cookies? Can you mash cookies and frosting together in a bowl? If you answered yes to both of these questions, you can make these truffles. (And if you are thinking these sound a bit like Oreo truffles, you're right. They're not made with Oreos or cream cheese, but the concept of cookie crumbs forming the…

SSE Photos and Spreadsheet
15 May 2012 | 7:00 amI managed to catch a nasty cold on my way back from Chicago, so I’ve been lying around the apartment for days. Fortunately, there was a silver lining to my achy, feverish misery: time off work meant extra time for obsessively cataloging my Sweets and Snacks Expo haul! Packaging photos are up in the ZOMG, Candy! Flickr, and I also listed everything in a spreadsheet. Sorting candy hit the intellectual demand sweet spot – enough work to keep me from being bored to tears, but not so much that my fever addled brain couldn’t handle it. -

Fortunately, Neil had written up the below guest post, so you still get a candy review today! ~Rosa Katja Choco Beertjes came into my life as a free inclusion with my occasional grocery delivery, which as some of you surely know, is a real blessing of a service for those of us who would otherwise carry a dozen paper towel rolls on a bike or a bus! Sweets and Snacks Days 2 and 3
10 May 2012 | 5:28 pmDay 2 at the Sweets and Snacks Expo was much more restrained, and I came home with a much smaller stash. Emma and I parted ways in the afternoon, so the below is just what I took as samples. Also remember that Day 1′s mountain of things included two giant swag bags provided to us by the NCA. Things of note on day 2: 1. I got a bunch of samples of Niederegger marzipans in an assortment of flavors. Super excited to try those, as they’re pricey in stores, so I’ve never had them before. 2. Gamer Grub turned out to be much less weird than expected. The PB&J mix was like trail… -

8 May 2012 | 7:17 pmWhew! What a day! Many thanks to Emma for playing Twitter master and wearing out the #SSE12 tag. Here’s me after we sorted through our haul. Most of the full-sized salty snacks came in our swag bags. Super nice of them to give them to us, but probably too difficult to fly home. After Emma and I split the goods and leave more with our Chicago host, we’ll be taking the extras back to the Expo and donating them to be sent to troops overseas. So nice that the Expo is providing that service! Here are some candy interactions that really stood out today: 1. The Perugina booth, where a… -

16 May 2012 | 5:37 amDid you know that this Sunday 20th May, is World Baking Day? Well no, either did I. But apparently it is, and they got in touch a couple of days ago to tell us about it. And they also sent this big box of ingredients to bake with along with some recipe cards. So now I guess I really have no choice but to bake something now! Lallapolosa Salted Caramel Pecan Dreams Brownie
14 May 2012 | 3:39 amI hadn’t heard of the Lallapolosa Baking Company before, but I’m never one to refuse brownies, so when they offered to send some of their pecan & salted caramel brownies, I bit their hand off – figuratively speaking. Lallapolosa make an extensive range of brownies, cakes, cookies & confections, but if I had to pick any one item, this would probably be it. For one thing, they come in huge boxes of 12 (1kg) or 18 (1.5kg) that look beautiful. Tied with a ribbon and wrapped in tissue paper, they just feel like a quality, handmade gift. But the wow factor doesn’t… -
Club Chocolat Français
11 May 2012 | 8:14 amClub Chocolat Français is, as you might have guessed, a French chocolate club. It operates along the same lines as Hotel Chocolat’s Chocolate Tasting Club. They’ve recently launched in the UK and they sent us a box to try. The club offers 3 month, 6 month and annual subscriptions at £19.95 per month. At least I assume that’s the “per month” price, as the website lists all subscription options for the same price, rather than giving the total cost of the subscription. For your money, you get a 320g box of assorted chocolates delivered every month. The first thing… -
Lindt Excellence Caramel With Sea Salt
9 May 2012 | 5:38 amShockingly, I’m back on the Lindt. This bar was one of a small selection given to us at the end of Lindt’s recent event at The Pearl restuarant, and the main reason I’m reviewing it is because it says “New” on it, and I want to see how it compares to that other new bar, the Lindt Wasabi which Simon reviewed last week. As you can see, the format of the bar is exactly the same as the rest of the Excellence range. It’s a simple, thin, 100g bar divided into ten squares. A quick glance at the back reveals that this bar uses the same, rather disappointing 47%… -
Kopali Organics Dark Chocolate Covered Banana
8 May 2012 | 5:23 amThe problem I usually have with chocolate covered items is the quality or type of chocolate. And if the chocolate isn’t right, I get bored. This Dark Chocolate Covered Banana packet from Kopali Organics was essentially an impulse buy; probably I was most interested in finding another rare chocolate/banana pairing. But happy I became to also find the chocolate half quite satisfactory. Kopali Organics fits well in stores like Whole Foods based on all the eco-empowerment type phrases on the package. They have both Fair Trade and USDA Organic certification and heavily emphasize working with…

Chocolate-Prune Cake
14 May 2012 | 1:24 amA while back, there was a spate of books about how to ‘sneak’ ingredients that are ‘healthy’ into food for your kids, to trick them into eating better. (Raymond Sokolov wrote an excellent rebuttal to that.) And recently there have been a few books written about how kids in France eat, and behave, better than their counterparts elsewhere. I can’t really comment on them in-depth because I haven’t read the books, but I do know two things from my own observations. Continue Reading Chocolate-Prune Cake... -
Restaurant Alain Ducasse
11 May 2012 | 3:07 amUncharacteristically, I’ll spare you the specifics, but I need to catch up on about 147 hours of sleep. And while we’re at it, I could use a hug. And since the former isn’t necessarily easy to come by here, as is the latter, I was embrassé by dinner at Alain Ducasse restaurant. While it’s been tempting to remove the “sweet life” byline from my header until things return to normal, since one of the sweeter sides of Paris is an occasional foray into fine dining, I dusted off my lone, non-dusty outfit, and rode the métro to a swankier part of town. When I… -
Turkey Melon
7 May 2012 | 4:22 amNot long ago, I mentioned the Lamb Melons I saw at a butcher stand at the Marché d’Anvers in Paris. Since it’s an afternoon market, I thought it might be fun to mosey over there at my leisure and pick one up for Sunday lunch. However I was surprised to see the market completely packed. Since there are less than a few dozen stands, it’s not surprising I suppose. Plus we had a holiday weekend ahead of us. I did my usual quick scan of everything and found the produce selection rather limited, although there were a few interesting things here and there. I picked up a… -
Kouign Amann at Le Grenier à Pain
6 May 2012 | 5:57 amToday is election day in France, and la République has the choice of re-electing the current President, or ushering in a new one. For people who usually have a lot of opinions, my French friends aren’t all that enthused about either one of the fellows. One is hoping to come into office, promising to represent Changement, and the other came into office five years ago, vowing changement, too. Sound familiar? The polls opened at 8am and the only change I was feeling was in my pocket, as I roamed the streets looking for a baguette. However instead of the buttery, yeasty aromas wafting… -
Tzatziki
3 May 2012 | 2:34 amA week or so ago, my French other half was under the weather. And it wasn’t until that point that I learned that not everyone understands the healing power of chicken soup. So I made a Poule au pot (chicken cooked in the pot) with carrots and little bits of pastina (pearl-shaped pasta) floating around in the broth, and stopped at the market to pick up a bunch of fresh dill to chop into it. Fresh herbs are widely used in French cooking and available in Paris markets, although some are hard to find, especially oregano, marjoram, and sage. Others, like thyme, rosemary, and tarragon are…

The rumors are true! Nestle Crunch Girl Scout Candy Bars
8 May 2012 | 8:22 pmThere's big news in the candy world today. A few months ago, rumors started flying around that Nestle Crunch was going to come out with a Limited Edition bar incorporating Girl Scouts Thin Mints. People went wild, including me. I love Thin Mints, so much so that I can't have them in the house. I can down an entire sleeve in no time flat. Well people, here's the announcement we've all been waiting for. Good friends, good cookies
2 May 2012 | 8:54 pmSay what you want about Facebook. Is it an invasion of privacy? Yes. Is it a stalker's playground? Yes. But it also brings some good into the world. For example, through the magic of social networking, I reconnected with an old friend from my high school and Mr. Goodbar's college. Turns out she was in town a few weeks ago, so after 20 or so years, we actually met up with each other again. It was wonderful to meet her family and to reminisce about old times. It was a great visit. Oh, did I mention she brought cookies? Berger cookies. Ever heard of them? I hadn't. They're a Baltimore thing. The… -
Welch's Filled Licorice
19 Apr 2012 | 7:51 pmWhen I was in college, I had three wisdom teeth removed. It was a nightmare experience and I always swore I'd never have the last one removed. Then, low and behold, at my last dental cleaning, the hygienist looked at my X-rays and said, "You have a cyst behind your last wisdom tooth. That has to come out." Fantastic. I explained that there was no way in heck I was going to do it, but then the thought occurred to me: Could this be causing my vertigo? Long story short, I had the tooth removed. It was a much better experience than the first time, although it didn't affect the vertigo at all. -
Allergen-free candy from Gimbal's
3 Apr 2012 | 8:39 pmI don't often run stuff straight from a press release (Candy Yum Yum is one place where I can be blissfully free from marketing banter), but in this case, I was impressed enough to want to share this info with you. (And, coincidentally enough, I happened to buy a bag of Gimbal's jelly beans the other day specifically because they're made in the U.S. and don't contain high fructose corn syrup). So here you go. Check this out: "Gimbal’s Fine Candies confectionary is one of the only major confectionary manufacturers in the USA that has committed to be free of the eight major food… -
Easter's on its way!
29 Mar 2012 | 7:05 pmHey Easter Peeps! It's been a while, I know, but rest assured: candy is still always on my mind. Of course, the big day is coming up and I've been on the lookout for something new and fun to try this Easter. I was very excited to find coconut Hershey Kisses. I liked these a lot. They don't have an overwhelming suntan lotion flavor like many coconut-flavored things tend to have, and they had bits of toasted coconut mixed in the cream filling, which gave them a nice texture. Last week I had wisdom tooth removed, so the night before I thought I'd finish off my last meal with some Cadbury Mini…

SLICE Act Would Bring Less Pizza, More Veggies To School Lunches
15 May 2012 | 2:19 pmGotta love a politician who loves his puns—especially if he also wants to get unhealthy pizza out of school cafeterias. I’m talking about Rep. Jared Polis, a Democrat from Colorado, whose proposed SLICE Act would end school lunch programs’ reliance on tomato paste—i.e. pizza sauce—as a qualified vegetable. “While tomato paste has a small amount of nutrients, pizza is loaded with sugar, salt, bread and cheese, which carry a great deal of fat and carbohydrates that turn into sugar during digestion,” a press release from Polis’s office noted. “Categorizing pizza as a… -
Unpasteurized Tempeh Recalled For Salmonella–Is It Safe?
15 May 2012 | 11:54 amFollowing the recall of unpasteurized tempeh sold by Asheville, North Carolina company Smiling Hara, FDA officials say they’ve been able to find the source of a strain of Salmonella that has sickened as many as 60 individuals in several states: an online retailer who sells tempeh starter cultures. The company now appears to have disappeared (and the FDA is looking into whether or not they sold any other tainted cultures), but plenty of consumers still have questions–most notably, whether or not unpasteurized tempeh is safe to eat, and, if so, how they should handle it to avoid… -

This week Scarlett Johansson bypassed her press rep and wrote a blog for Huffington Post addressing the lies tabloids printed about her “dramatic weight loss” for her role as Black Widow in The Avengers. While she confesses to working out harder than usual to prepare for the movie, she completely denies her alleged crash diet that supposedly resulted in her losing 14 pounds. Dunkin Donuts Launches Black Cocoa Creme Iced Coffee…With More Sugar Than A Snickers
15 May 2012 | 9:45 amIn honor of next week’s release of Men In Black 3, Dunkin Donuts has released its own movie-inspired drink: the Black Cocoa Creme Iced Coffee. It’s an iced coffee that tastes like cookies and cream, they say. And it’s served with a special pink and black straw, of course. Which admittedly sounds fun–and kind of good. Until you read the nutritional content. This specialty drink has more sugar than most candy bars! According to their website, a medium serving of the Black Cocoa Creme Iced Coffee has a whopping 34 grams of sugar. And that’s without adding any of… -
Paleo Recipe: Eggs ‘Benedict’ With Salmon
14 May 2012 | 12:05 pmA few weeks ago, we posted an interview with trainer and nutritionist Nell Stephenson, author of the new paleo diet guide Paleoista. The book packages the paleo diet in a more feminine way—think less caveman, more ‘Skinnygirl’ for paleos (minus the artificial preservatives). The book explains paleo diet principles (no grains, legumes or dairy; lots of veggies, lean meats, fruit and fish) and includes more than 50 recipes, including this paleo twist on eggs benedict with salmon. Eggs “Benedict” with Salmon Stephenson says: Forget the English muffin, vinegar, and…

29 Apr 2012 | 9:00 amI started Making chocolates when i was 8 years old, I would put them into decorated egg boxes as gifts for my family and ever since then I have had the bug. I studied at the Cassio College in Hertfordshire and was the recipient of the Renshaw Challenge cup in 1987..... that basically set the tone for the rest of my carreer. I ran away to the Netherlands in 1993 and became pastry chef, head chef and chocolatier at the extremely popular Ma Brown's in Haarlem, there made the British tradition of Afternoon Tea an Institution baking and creating to sell out "audiences". 25 Apr 2012 | 2:12 amThe Innovators In Pursuit of the New for 100 Years Felchlin Company histories are usually all about change, about leaps forward, highs and lows; they are a patchwork of differences. However, the Felchlin company history is different. In the 100 years since its foundation, it has been shaped by a remarkable amount of continuity: - The products – these have developed over time but always have satisfied a sweet tooth. - The customers – although they have changed, they have always stayed the same, pastry chefs and, more recently, also confectioners. - The pursuit of the new – the company… -

13 Apr 2012 | 5:24 pmRaw cacao nibs just arrived and how lovely the scent of roasting them fills the air. I smell chocolat brownies and yummy goodness. Roasting Nib Time: 250'F - 30 minutes I am learning to appreciate the taste of the cacao nib. When they arrived they were sharp, violently bitter, aggressive, abusive. My kind oven tamed them and now, they're delicate, soft, obedient, pleasing and ready to be made into chocolat. Batch #7 will be made with roasted nibs and batch #8 raw nibs. Raw, on occasion can be exciting, at least interesting. -

Batch #5 Bean to Bar
11 Apr 2012 | 10:14 amBatch # 5 is under my belt and I am feeling like a proud momma. I’ve made a 70%, 55% and a milk chocolat 45% all with a Peruvian bean. After much making and tasting I have decided the Peruvian bean is not for me. Yes it makes Chocolat. The Chocolat is not bad but the Chocolat it makes is tart and fruity. Maybe it’s great Chocolat and I’ve just eaten too much. My audience has been pleased. I’ve ordered beans today from Ghana, Venezula, Madagascar and Ecuador. I joyfully await there arrival as I wonder what stimulation it will bring. I’ve also made hazelnut butter from toasted…

Do you know the Easter Bunny?
6 Apr 2012 | 8:23 amHere at Lake Champlain Chocolates, we know the Easter Bunny has many personalities. Everyone recognizes that big, white bunny that sneaks around hiding eggs – but why? And how? It all started way back in the 13th Century in Germany, when people celebrated the beginning of spring by honoring the goddess Eostra. Eostra symbolized fertility, and soon became associated with rabbits (who are known for being very fertile). The first Easter Bunny legend, though, wasn’t published until 1680. The tale about a rabbit carrying around eggs and hiding them in gardens really took off when… -
The Hunt is On.
29 Mar 2012 | 3:42 pmCars are honking. No, not in a bad, “I’m so annoyed” kind of way (this is Vermont after all). These honks sound happy. Yes, even honks can have personality. Ok, so why are all these cars honking so much? I’ll give you one guess. The Easter Bunny! Everyone loves the Easter Bunny. He dances. He waves. He wears a bowtie. Ok, sometimes kids may want to keep their distance, but absolutely everyone loves what the Easter Bunny brings in his basket each year. A chocolate bunny, some chocolate Easter eggs, jelly beans,… -

GCLMS Launch with Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare/National Program for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour in Cocoa (NPECLC)
23 Mar 2012 | 11:59 amEntry: Margaret Odotei, World Cocoa Foundation It must have been the great ‘Boboobo’ dancing of the traditional dance group at the event, or the fact that Likpe Bakwa in Hohoe is home to some of the most beautiful sceneries in Ghana, or maybe it just was the hard work by NPECLC and its partners that had brought us all to this festive day. Participating in the GCLMS (Ghana Child Labour Monitoring System) launch at Likpe Bakwa in Hohoe in the Volta region of Ghana has been one of the most fulfilling moments so far this year. The GCLMS aims at obtaining comprehensive information, instituting… -

The platform meeting clearly opened opportunities for collaboration and identified the challenges of local and international supply chain and productivity perspectives. The introduction on AMARTA II program clearly confirmed that focus lies on structural improvements on productivity and effectiveness of supply chain supported by both public and private parties. Got Some Girl Guide Cookies (Canadian Edition)
15 May 2012 | 2:00 pmMy friend Carrie recently sent me 6 boxes of Girl Guide cookies. While I like the Girl Scout cookies from the U.S.A, these have a much more nostalgic place in my heart. Thanks Carrie!!!CC -
What I Learned On The Back Of a Bag Of Pretzels
15 May 2012 | 1:00 pmWhile flying to Canada from my stop in Rome, I got a bag of pretzels and crackers to munch on. I have to say I don't really mind getting pretzels and crackers over peanuts on flights. It's a lighter snack, and in this case, there's a better variety of flavours and textures.I also got a glass of what they called "orange juice" but really there was nothing orange about it at all. The colour was like... well you can see it above, and the flavour was like super intense tang. But I'm getting off topic. On the back of my bag of pretzel snacks, it came with a short story about… -

It's National Chocolate Chip Day!!!
15 May 2012 | 9:00 amWhy do they call them chocolate chips. I imagine at one point it actually made sense, maybe these little chocolate bits were chipped off of larger blocks of chocolate. Today if we see irregularly shaped chips of chocolate we tend to call them chunks. The things we call chips today appear to be small little squirts, rather than something I'd define as a chip.CC -

Planning Your Wedding Cake
3 May 2012 | 1:28 pmWeddings are chock full of decisions. Dress, flowers, food, cake, favors, and let’s not get into the people and who to invite! Some brides have it all figured out and know exactly what they want. Others take each choice as it comes and figures it out as they go. I work to make the decision of the cake fun so that you get just what you want and enjoy the journey as well.Architecture vs TasteYes, wedding cakes are beautiful to look at. What can really make one stand out, however, is if it also tastes good. I wholeheartedly believe that taste should come first. You may have many pretty… -
Chocolate Wedding Favors Win Every Time
13 Mar 2012 | 11:00 amThere are many thoughts on what makes the best wedding favor. Frames, candles and candle holders, personalized glassware, salt and pepper shakers and pretty soups are all popular choices. For the most part, however, they are all knick knacks to be left on a shelf gathering dust. Unless it is your wedding, or someone who is close to you, you really do not leave wedding favors out as a home decoration which makes many types of wedding favors pointless and a waste of money. What Makes a Memorable Wedding Favor? For a memorable wedding favor, that is sinfully delicious, think chocolate. St. Patrick’s Day Fun

Halfway through Lent
8 Mar 2012 | 11:03 amSpringtime Greetings! And for those who observe the season of Lent you are almost halfway through!Did you know the word “Lent” means spring. It’s when everything that is sleeping, resting, or sluggish, begins to bud and bring forth a fresh newness. It’s a time of looking to fullness of life, buds begin to show before the full blooming of the flower and the fruit that will later grow on our trees, seedlings push up from the soil and grow quickly for our nourishment or visual pleasure.A Time of ReflectionWhile Lent is a time of fasting and prayer for Christians, it is… -

Route 1 Racer Bar
15 May 2012 | 5:46 pmOne of the most popular candy bars in the country is the Snickers bar. The construction of the bar is… -
Route 1 Romeo Bar
